Further bringing all this power and torque to heel is fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+. The all-wheel-drive system has been optimised for electrification and can check and adjust torque settings up to 10,000 times per minute, depending on the selected drive mode.

Rear-wheel steering is an important addition to a vehicle with such impressive dimensions. In the EQS 53, it allows a better low-speed turning circle than the diminutive A-Class hatchback but also brings greater stability and reassurance as speeds rise.

Optimising performance to the driver’s preference is easy and intuitive, with the EQS 53 equipped with AMG DYNAMIC SELECT. There are five driving modes ranging from Comfort to Sport+, the latter allowing access to maximum driving power.

A multi-sensual sound experience

I know what you’re thinking – performance, yes; handling, check; but how will the new EQS 53 sound? How will it feel?

The good news is that AMG has made a priority of evoking the same sense of visceral connection from the EQS 53. With AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE, a new soundtrack is created using special speakers, shakers and a sound generator. The driver can choose from two versions, ‘Authentic’ or ‘Performance’, to generate sound, vibration and ambient light with an intensity and tone to match the driving status and selected driving mode. AMG promises “a completely new, multi-sensual sound experience” that provides “the perfect level of goosebumps for any situation”.

The EQS 53 steps into the future in a number of other significant ways. It’s one of the first models to be equipped with the MBUX Hyperscreen, a 141cm curved display that draws together the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system. It boasts rapidly evolving capacity for artificial intelligence, along with crisp OLED displays that serve both the driver and front-seat passenger.

The result is as beautiful as it is intelligent, with advanced capability to ‘learn’ the habits of its occupants and provide helpful prompts and suggestions. The system includes specific settings for AMG performance functions, as well as functions to manage driving range and charging functions.

Sculpted and luxurious AMG sports seats, plus a sleek exterior design featuring frameless doors with flush-fitting door handles and unmistakable AMG design cues, ensure the first all-electric AMG performance vehicle stays true to the brand ethos. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ proves an all-electric model can embody not just all the performance that Mercedes-AMG customers expect, but also make a highly emotional connection.
