“A high-tech, supercar-slaying rocketship that hides under a sensible five-door hatchback” – that’s how judges of the 2021 Drive Car of the Year Awards have described the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S in naming it their ‘Best Sports Car under $100,000’.

The A 45 S won following exhaustive testing and thorough analysis by Drive’s team of judges at Sydney’s Luddenham Raceway, involving 80 vehicles in 25 categories.

“It redefines what a hot hatch can be and elevates the category to one of the ‘hyper’ hatch,” said James Ward, the Director of Content for Drive.

“The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S offers an amazing driveline that will see it hunt down and pass far more exotic machinery on any racetrack.”

According to Drive, the vehicles were judged on driver technology, comfort, safety, ongoing running costs, performance and handling.

The latter criteria were especially relevant to the performance-tuned A 45 S with what were described as “the numerical credentials of a supercar” – a 310 kW, 500 Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving all four wheels, and acceleration to match. “It delivers its performance in a supremely entertaining and accessible package,” Ward said.

“The technology offered in the cabin is consistently impressive and works as well for regular use as it does in a performance environment.”

Ward summarised the A 45 S as “quite simply, a weaponised hatchback”.

In terms of accessible performance, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S has catapulted the hot hatch game into the stratosphere.”

The 15th annual Drive Car of the Year Awards comes at the end of a year in which Drive’s team drove, reviewed, compared and lived with almost 600 vehicles, said Drive Managing Editor and award judge Trent Nikolic.

“The Drive Car of the Year testing week is the culmination of a year of reviewing, comparing, testing and debating everything the Australian automotive market has to offer in order to deliver the best of the best with Australia’s most relevant motoring awards,” he said.
