In the history of the automobile, sedans are one of the most traditional body styles – signifying strength, utility, heritage and performance. For Mercedes-Benz, sedans represent contemporary design, new technologies and a progressive, avant-garde approach to luxury. Here, we explore their enduring beauty.

A timeless classic

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan is known for offering a masterful blend of classic design features and advanced engineering. The launch of the very first C-Class Sedan – the 202 series – in 1993 came with impressive technical innovations and a timeless, elegant look.

“The design of the first C-Class was intended to appeal to a broad public with a sleek, aesthetic and timeless form,” says Professor Peter Pfeiffer, head of design at Mercedes-Benz from 1999 to 2008. “It fitted naturally into the design idiom of the brand. Its success showed that this consolidation, which was planned from the beginning, was the right way to go. The 202 series became a runaway success.”

When it comes to the current C-Class Sedan, the enhanced driver and passenger experience has made it a touchstone of the Mercedes-Benz range and the broader market of luxury sedans.

Powered by a smooth 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, the C 200 opens the C-Class range with 150kW and 300Nm, while the C 300 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine to deliver 190kW and 400Nm. Both models feature EQ Boost – a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that incorporates an integrated starter-generator.

“…with a sleek, aesthetic and timeless form… the 202 series became a runaway success,” says Professor Pfeiffer.

The broad appeal of the C-Class range has been further elevated by the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE Sedan, which promises an electrifying driving experience. Its plug-in hybrid drivetrain delivers a combined power output of 500kW and supercar-levels of performance and dynamism.

Beyond the segment-leading performance offered by the new-generation AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE, it also boasts a combined fuel consumption figure of just 6.9L/100km and offers an electric-only range of up to 15km. The ability to embrace purely electric propulsion proves that the new AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is as innovative as it is luxurious.

Leaders in technology

Also on the horizon is the all new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan. Another classic silhouette, this vehicle represents the bridge between tradition and digitalisation, with aesthetic influence from the S-Class. Inside, the all new E-Class Sedan will feature the innovative MBUX Superscreen, marrying three digital touchscreens under one expanse of glass in the ultimate expression of luxury[1]. Its all-electric counterpart, the EQE Sedan, is equally as spectacular and represents a new era of electric mobility – combining sensuous aesthetics with pioneering technology.

Of course, the Mercedes-Benz sedan range wouldn’t be complete without the iconic S-Class. The history of the S-Class officially dates back to 1972 – but the lineage of luxurious and technologically advanced Mercedes-Benz sedans began decades earlier. The current S-Class is the eighth generation of luxury sedans from Mercedes-Benz, and it builds upon the tradition and technical learnings from every Mercedes-Benz model that came before it. As always, the S-Class is a technology leader, a pioneer of luxury and a benchmark – not only for Mercedes-Benz but for the broader automotive industry.

The design language is pure, minimal and yet utterly distinctive. There’s luxury in the surfacing and the details, and it’s a theme that the S-Class is proud to display. Flush-fitting door handles improve aerodynamics and offer an inviting handshake every time you step inside; soft-close doors welcome you to a sumptuous interior that is the true epitome of modern luxury.

The same philosophy is mirrored in the EQS Sedan, which was the first ever all-electric sedan from Mercedes-Benz. Though athletic in both appearance and performance – think high-quality light-alloy wheels, futuristic LED taillights, thrilling acceleration and an indicative electric range of up to 570km – the EQS Sedan is often admired for its elegant silhouette and one-bow design.

From the C-Class to the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz sedans share a strength of design, commitment to heritage and focus on modernity – plus a cohesive blend of luxury and performance.
