Since its debut in 1979, the G-Class has maintained its distinctive identity as a purpose-built off-road vehicle against which other SUVs are measured. Its boxy silhouette, robust construction and exceptional performance capabilities have made it a favourite among adventurers and luxury SUV enthusiasts alike.
Now, with the introduction of four electric motors, the G-Class is entering a bold new chapter – one that preserves its core DNA while embracing contemporary innovation.
Advanced electric architecture
The all new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology masterfully integrates electric powertrain technology with the G-Class' familiar framework. Its robust ladder frame has been intelligently modified to house the high-voltage battery pack – something that actually enhances the vehicle’s prowess by lowering the centre of gravity while maintaining the ground clearance relied on by true off-road enthusiasts.
And with a smart energy recuperation system providing enhanced control during steep descents, the new G-Class also ensures minimal delays during long journeys.
Transforming off-road performance
The G 580 with EQ Technology delivers impressive power from a 116kWh battery capacity. Four electric motors – one for each wheel – deliver a combined output of 432kW of power and 1164Nm of torque. This sophisticated powertrain enables the G 580 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds – a remarkable figure given the electric SUV’s size and weight.
The ingenuity of the powertrain lies in the fact that each motor carries its own two-speed transmission, with a high and low range operated via ‘virtual diff lock’ buttons on the dash to master more demanding off-road adventures. The individual wheel motors enable unprecedented control and power distribution, with the vehicle's electronic systems constantly optimising torque delivery based on terrain conditions.
The G 580 also introduces three revolutionary new features that showcase the advantages of electric power in off-road scenarios: G-Turn, G-Steering and G-Crawl.
