The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class is reimagined for a new era with the G 580, masterfully blending its legendary DNA with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology.
The G 580's exterior commands immediate attention with its timeless silhouette, enhanced with modern touches. The classic radiator grille has evolved into an optional Black Panel variant featuring an illuminated contour, creating a striking visual signature that bridges past and present. Aerodynamically optimised wheels and a thoughtfully designed rear box demonstrate Mercedes-Benz's commitment to efficiency without compromising the G-Class's distinctive character.
Central to this innovative new model is EQ technology, carefully integrated to preserve the G-Class's renowned offroad capabilities. The imaginative engineering of the G 580 sees the model’s traditional ladder frame platform maintained with seamless inclusion of the 116kWh battery to provide a low centre of gravity. Four individually controlled motors are located near the wheels, integrated into the ladder frame and develop a maximum total output of 432 kW and a maximum torque of 1,164 Nm. The vehicle's underbody protection system not only shields the battery from dust and water, but includes a mix of materials such as carbon fibre and a layer of stone-chip protection to ensure durability without adding excessive weight.
Forging a new path in offroad capability
The G 580 with EQ Technology introduces groundbreaking offroad technologies that deliver next generation performance on challenging terrains and enhance the hard-won reputation of the G-Class as the perfect vehicle for adventure.
The remarkable G-TURN function enables the vehicle to perform a spectacular 360-degree turn on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces offroad. G-STEERING offers unprecedented manoeuvrability in challenging terrain, facilitating a significantly smaller turning circle. The three-speed offroad crawl function, meanwhile, acts like cruise control when offroading – maintaining optimum propulsion and precise control while the driver focuses on navigating the terrain during technical offroad passages.
Like other G-Class vehicles, the G 580 can confidently traverse 45-degree slopes and drive along 35-degree angles, and has a remarkable wading depth of 850mm.
Another noteworthy innovation is the G-ROAR system, which brings a characteristic G-Class sound signature to the all new electric G 580. In addition to a G-Class-specific driving sound, the system offers one ‘aura’ sound and a variety of ‘event’ sounds.
A particularly useful feature is the G 580’s transparent bonnet, which uses cameras to create a virtual view through the vehicle's front end, displaying crucial terrain information on the central display. This technology proves invaluable when navigating steep inclines or rocky obstacles, offering drivers superior visibility of the immediate terrain.
