In a place as vast and beautiful as Australia, off-roading is one of the best ways to explore. From secluded beach tracks to remote desert plains, there are so many hidden corners to discover – all you need is an off-road vehicle as tough and enduring as the terrain you’re tackling.
The Mercedes-Benz G450 d is built for adventure. It continues the hard-won reputation of the iconic G-Class, blending comfort, technology and rugged off-road prowess.
The new diesel-powered variant is ideal for drivers looking for the timeless appeal of the G-Wagen with the efficiency and torque-rich character of a modern diesel car. In other words, the ultimate off-road vehicle.
Distinctively G-Class
The G 450 d looks every bit a G-Class: a boxy silhouette, upright stance and exposed spare wheel on the rear.
Yet the new variant also feels thoroughly contemporary. LED lighting, a chrome grille and 18-inch alloy wheels give it a modern presence, while optional off-road add-ons with a roof rack, ladder and aggressive all-terrain tyres underline its rugged credentials. Short overhangs front and rear preserve excellent approach and departure angles, and familiar touches – from the protruding indicators to the reassuringly solid door handles – will appeal to purists.
The heritage of the G-Wagen is continued inside with hand-fitted leather, wood trims and the latest-generation multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather.
The MBUX infotainment system takes centre stage. Dual 12.3-inch screens display everything from augmented reality navigation to Android Auto Wireless and Apple CarPlay. Heated electric seats with memory function, ambient lighting and a sliding sunroof add to the sense of refinement, while the craftsmanship ensures the G 450 d feels every inch the premium car.
On-road driving experience
Under the bonnet lies a three-litre turbocharged inline-six diesel engine delivering 270kW and a hefty 750Nm of torque. An integrated starter-generator adds another 15kW and 200Nm when called upon, smoothing start-stop transitions and lending additional power during overtaking. This is channelled through the nine-speed automatic transmission to the permanent all-wheel drive system.
The result is startling performance for such a large diesel off-road vehicle: 0-100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. Drivers will immediately notice how effortlessly the G 450 d gathers pace. The immense torque makes motorway cruising serene, thanks to impressive noise, vibration and harshness refinement. Around town, the integrated 48-volt mild hybrid system reduces diesel clatter, ensuring quiet progress at low speeds.
Compared with the Mercedes-AMG G 63, which delivers thunderous performance, the G 450 d feels more measured – yet no less satisfying. It trades headline horsepower for deep reserves of torque, making it ideal for long-distance touring or towing and remote-area travel.
Behind the wheel, the G 450 d strikes a balance between old-school solidity and modern sophistication: steering is weighty yet precise, ride comfort is excellent thanks to adaptive suspension, and the sense of commanding the road remains intact.
