Tough Conversations with Henry Rollins.

Toughness is most often interpreted as a masculine trait, a hallmark of manliness. From tribal societies to sedentary, industrialised cultures, the traditional idea of toughness incorporates the qualities of endurance, fearlessness, self-control, and aggression.

We believe toughness today can be mental as much as physical. Principled, as much as powerful. Progressive, rather than aggressive. Standing up, instead of standing over. Listening, instead of talking. It’s about strength of character, as much as physical power. Ex-lead singer of punk-rock outfit Black Flag, Henry Rollins, is a man who embodies this evolution of tough.

Rollins has had incarnations as a television and radio host, comedian, Spoken Word artist, activist and actor. Despite his muscular appearance and punk-rock background, Henry Rollins has always been one to defy conventions.

Starting today, Henry Rollins will be driving around Australia in a Mercedes-Benz X-Class, having conversations with everyday, and not-so-everyday Australians. Rollins will be asking these people what toughness means to them. The answers, and the people, might surprise you.

Like Rollins, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class embodies a new kind of tough. Managing to be both robust and stylish, the X-Class combines masculine boldness with the sleek lines of traditional Mercedes-Benz design. A broad track-width, agile handling, and multilink rear-axle suspension hold steady on most terrain – gravel, rocks, mud, or wet tarmac.

Alloy wheels of up to 19” lend style and efficiency. The 4MATIC variants’ powerful engine and chassis tows 3.5 tonnes to make light work of many boats, horse-trailers or camper-trailers. The X-Class is worker, adventurer and aesthetically pleasing all in one, equally at home in an urban or an off-road environment.

Available with 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission, the X-Class 4MATIC variants boast all-wheel drive and a clearance of 220mm for confidence on steep, rocky inclines. Comfortable on gradients of up to 45 degrees, you can take it almost anywhere.

Inside the X-Class is where you’ll find three different design approaches for the PURE, the PROGRESSIVE and the POWER. All characteristically spacious, the PURE is the stripped back, workhorse of the three, elegant, yet simple and pragmatic.

A few premium touches make the PROGRESSIVE the vehicle for an effortless transition between work and the weekend. Finally, the POWER showcases Mercedes-Benz’s luxury credentials, with optional leather seats and a variety of customisation and trim options.

Whether you’re PURE, PROGRESSIVE or POWER, toughness has taken a step up.
