Sipping on a refreshing spritz in the warm summer sun, with the sound of Italian melodies playing in the background. This is the scene that awaits you at one of Bar Positano’s events. Taking New South Wales by storm, they’re a food truck and café that is bringing the Amalfi coast to Australia.
We caught up with the co-owner of Bar Positano, Luca Andolfo, to find out more about the inspiration behind the business, and what sets it apart from other Italian food trucks. Starting as a food truck during the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving into a brick-and-mortar store since, the business has grown with the demand. "And the results speak for themselves," says Luca.
Bar Positano’s Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a sight to behold, with its bright blue and yellow stripes reminiscent of the Amalfi Coast, complete with beach umbrellas and deck chairs. "We wanted our truck to look like a summer party on wheels," says Luca. With a fully equipped Pantech that houses a coffee machine, fridges, freezers and benchtop appliances, Bar Positano is ready to serve café-quality coffee and Italian bites at a moment's notice.
"Every day is different when you're operating a food truck," says Luca. "You get to travel around, meet new people and be a part of some truly amazing events." Bar Positano has been a part of many big and memorable events, including weddings, pride festivities and large sporting events.
When it comes to the menu, their coffee is always a crowd-pleaser, but Bar Positano's signature panino – the ‘Tradizionale’, made with prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, basil and olive tapenade – is a close runner-up. For those looking to indulge in something a little stronger, Bar Positano's signature summer cocktail – the ‘Positano Kiss’, made with gin, St Germain, passionfruit and lime – is the perfect way to unwind.
What sets Bar Positano apart is its versatility. "You can find many Italian food trucks selling pizzas or pasta, but none that are a café/bar on wheels," says Luca. "We tailor our menu based on the client, event type and time of day." This means they can serve spritz and cocktails at night-time events or the best Italian pastries and coffee for morning brunches.
When asked about the choice of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for the food truck, Luca explains: "The Sprinter was designed to embody the essence of Italian summer. We chose it for its luxury and reliability, having previously owned and operated Mercedes-Benz vehicles."
The size of the Sprinter makes the team's work easier, with enough room to house all the necessary café equipment and appliances. "It's quite spacious, and you sometimes forget you're in a food truck," says Luca
As for the events Bar Positano will be attending? "We've been busy with 2023 World Pride, the 2-week event in Sydney celebrating the LGBTQ+ community," says Luca. “Then it’s on to the Australian Grand Prix!”. We’re excited to see the Bar Positano Sprinter alongside our F1 team at Albert Park in a few weeks. Be sure to stop in to grab a panino and soak up la dolce vita.
