So it makes plenty of sense that the giant freight and logistics provider has added 131 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans to its nationwide fleet. The large capacity Sprinters have been used to strategically replace smaller trucks for parcel delivery work.
Terry Bickerton, the National Manager Fleet for StarTrack and its parent company Australia Post, is delighted with the customised Sprinters.
“We have between 600 and 700 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in our combined fleet, and we’re very happy with them, so we had a good place to start when it came to this new order,” he said.
In all, Mercedes-Benz has delivered 120 long wheelbase 516 Sprinters and 11 medium wheelbase 313 Sprinters.
“Mercedes-Benz has been able to supply us with a factory-built van which is purpose-built for our needs,” Terry said.
“As a fleet manager that’s ideal because it’s faster and easier. I don’t have to worry about consistency across states or anything like that, and if there are any problems they are covered by warranty.”
Along with the Sprinter’s renowned quality, reliability and low whole-of-life costs, safety was a major factor in the decision to go with Mercedes-Benz.
“With the Sprinters the drivers can get out of their seat, move through the interior of the van, find the parcel they are delivering and then exit through the sliding door straight onto the footpath, which is a fantastic safety feature,” Terry said.
