Klim took a number of lessons from the pool into his business. ‘I was super analytical in the pool. The more we can learn about our competitors, the better we become,’ he says. And much like athletic life, he’s always seeking to improve his personal best. ‘As an athlete you’re always looking for ways to improve whether it’s training, recovery or nutrition. It’s the same in business. You have to evolve and adapt. You never rest on your laurels,’ he adds.
He’s certainly not resting. When we meet, Klim is driving between meetings in his custom branded Mercedes-Benz Van. Having the V-Class eases the challenges that come with a hectic schedule. ‘We do a lot of events, we do deliveries. It makes a huge difference for our business. It parks itself - perfect when I’m going into the city,’ he says.
Although opportunities for downtime are limited, Klim knows that he must make time for rest and recovery in the same way that he had as a swimmer. ‘When I first got stuck into work, I neglected looking after myself. Now I make it a priority. I love surfing, that’s my solo time - a digital detox,’ he says and explains that he he has plenty of opportunities to surf, as he splits his time between Melbourne and Bali, where his children, Stella, Rocco and Frankie are based.
