With a history of unconventional creative thinking and cutting edge design, Mercedes-Benz are proud to be the Principal Partner of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk at the National Gallery of Victoria. The unique creative vision of Jean Paul Gaultier, ‘L’enfant terrible’ of fashion, has also been realised in the collaboration of a one-off SL-Class design, exclusive to this exhibition and on display at the NGV as part of Friday Nights at Jean Paul Gaultier.
The exhibition showcases more than 140 superbly crafted garments spanning Gaultier’s incredible career, including the first dress he created in 1971 right through to recent works created for some of the world’s most glamorous men and women. Compromising of accessories, sketches, stage costumes, photography and excerpts from films, runway shows, concerts and dance performances, this exhibition will help illustrate the intriguing story of this unrivalled fashion designer as well as the influences, passions and obsessions that feature in his work.
Renowned for his unconventional and playfully irreverent designs, the NGV exhibition will include exclusive material not exhibited in previous venues, such as pieces from his recent haute couture, ready-to-wear collections and stage costumes worn by the likes of Madonna and Beyoncé.
In another exclusive feature for the NGV, a section on Gaultier’s Australian muses is being specially developed and will include brilliantly executed pieces created for Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman.
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk exhibition is on display at the National Gallery of Victoria (St Kilda Road) from 17 October 2014 until 8 February 2015.
The exhibition is organised by The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier.
