Fuel Cell Development

Making internal combustion engines even better.

In the short and medium terms, our most important goal is to optimise today's petrol and diesel engines and make them even more efficient and lower in emissions.

We want to make petrol engines as efficient as diesel engines and diesel engines as clean as petrol engines. We've recently introduced a particulate filter, now we're trying to further reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions without sacrificing the fuel efficiency and economy of diesel engines.

The BlueTec® breakthrough

Thanks to our innovative modular BlueTec® technology, Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles will be the cleanest in the world. Recently launched in Europe, Mercedes Car Group hopes to make this technology available in the near future in Australia. The use of BlueTec® technology means that Nitrogen Oxide emissions can be reduced by up to a staggering 80%.

Fuels of the future

With the goal of discovering and refining new fuels to replace fossil fuels, we are excited by what the future may hold for the use of alternative fuel sources. In fact, the benefits of fuel alternatives such as biodiesel and bioethanol are fast becoming a reality.

In the Magdeburg Declaration of November 2005, Daimler AG stated its commitment to further support the development of biofuels. We are committed to creating the technologies that will enable vehicles to run on fuels with up to 10% admixtures of biodiesel or bioethanol.
